I regularly talk about the importance of getting into your routine, but very often we sabotage those efforts by not being “selfish” enough.
I am currently reading a book by Author and motivational/self-actualization guru, Larry Winget that I recommend you read. It's called "No Time For Tact."
In the book, he shares 365 daily nuggets of wisdom. It's good stuff.
His July 2 nugget says:
"I believe in selfishness. The best way for me to serve others
is to selfishly serve myself well. When I take the time to feel good physically, I do a better job.
That requires some selfishness.
When I do what I want to do, I am better at it, and the better
I am at what I do, the better others are served by what I do.
It is possible to give so much of yourself away that you compromise
the quality of what you have to give."
I like to use the oxygen mask analogy to describe this.
"If you're traveling with small children, put your mask on first
THEN help your children with theirs."
Because if you can't breathe, you can't help anybody.
VERY serious advice that cannot be overlooked for long or YOU will pay the price.
How to be effectively (and selflessly) selfish:
Plug the "big rock" stuff into your calendar first:
- Your personal downtime
- Your family time
- Your workouts
- Your sleep
- Your personal/professional growth time for reading/studying/ planning/goal-setting
And then be disciplined about honoring/protecting that time.
For busy people like you, this can be one of the biggest struggles you face because there's always busy work to do. And without real
discipline to the schedule, it can and does easily leak over into what should be your time.
It’s up to you to make it a great day, so be selfish!
"You don't drown by falling in the water; you only drown if you stay there."
